Building a Student-Led Experiential Learning Program Using Tech and Humanities

The Connected Learning Program started as an experiment two years ago and has quickly grown into a student-centered approach to learning that has touched the lives of about 67 students at Chinese International School, and more than three dozen students in other local area schools. The practice combines the life lessons and mentoring guidance of adults in the CIS alumni and parent network, with student-led projects and innovation projects that link technology and the humanities.

This student- and teacher-facilitated presentation will cover how one Connected Learning project,  the Beijing Tech Camp, was developed through student-led initiatives. We will discuss the format of the tech camp, the structure of the conversations, and the measurement of its effectiveness, and we will show examples of how the learning and the teaching occurred.

Teachers who wish to adopt Connected Learning practices for their own pedagogy, and add to them, are welcome to join in on this topic; we will take a very audience-focused approach to this seminar. We will invite lots of questions and create many moments of dialogue.

Participants will gain:

  • An understanding of connected learning
  • An understanding of how different cultures learn
  • A better understanding of how to draw in different strands of culture and thinking into a space that appreciates and welcomes diverse experiences and multidisciplinary learning, producing outcomes that help others
