Misreading Silence: Western misunderstandings of Confucian heritage culture students

The presentation begins by looking at some surprising primary school reading literacy results from Hong Kong and then explores the context for English learning in Hong Kong. It then looks at some key Confucian attitudes to learning, before comparing these traits with Western teachers' typical expectations about learning. In particular, it focuses on the aspects of memorization and verbalisation. The final section looks at contemporary attitudes to Chinese university students studying in the UK, exploring some of the social, political and economic contexts of Chinese learners in the UK. The talk concludes by pulling these different strands together.

Outcomes of the Presentation:

  • Greater awareness of the ways that Confucian culture influences contemporary attitudes to student learning
  • Challenging some stereotypes about Chinese learners
  • Highlighting some of the challenges faced by Chinese learners when they study in the UK and other Western countries
